- How is your new place? Do you enjoy it so far?
- Yeah! I love it, the owners are rarely at home, I get the living room, the dining room for myself pretty much all day if I want to! And it's only $400.
- Can't beat that! You know I have a room for rent too. Not a room technically, it's a living room and I put a thin wall to make it a room. It's $700!
- What?! $700 for a frail room? (realize I'm a bit too straightforward) I guess it's near UCI so it's the market price then?
- Yeah! You're right! A Chinese girl recently moved in. I put the ad in some International student forum and got numerous emails. I asked them about themselves so you know to get first impression of their lifestyle and see which one matches mine the best, thus we might be able to live in peace, no drama, disputes, annoyances. She studied Chemical Engineering in China, 22 and enjoys reading books, I figured it's better than a Marketing girl who likes to party - she's gonna be loud and dramatic (holding myself from shouting I was majored in Marketing haha). You can tell she's gonna be quite and that's what I prefer. And she will study at UCI so that's convenient for her so yeah.
- Ok! So how is she?
- She just flew from China last month. Upon arrival she asked me how to get from LAX to Irvine, so I asked her back if she knew Uber, and recommended that service. She said she was familiar.
- When she arrived and called me, she had 3 suitcases and she's this tiny litter girl, very innocent and young. So I asked her how she got here. She said her Uber didn't work so she had to catch a taxi. Ok then I asked how much for the whole trip. She was quite. "$100? $200?" She was still silent and shook her head . Sweetheart how much was it? What's wrong? Then you know what?
- What? $300?
- NO!
- $400. And I think that shouldn't be higher than $400.
- She caught this taxi and this black guy demanded $500 to drive her from LAX to Irvine.
- (stunned) What the heck!
- That was not it! Then when they arrived that fucker took another $200 from her. She was really scared and I guess she just gave him whatever amount he wants to avoid the worst.
- $700! Why would anyone do this?
- You're right! So I asked her where was that fucker and I told her to get in my car and drive to the nearby Starbuck (I wondered how she knew) to see if he was still there. Then I would interrogate him and call the police. That was fucking robbery and I can't let the poor girl's first impression of America to be this.
- So did you catch him?
- No! Unfortunately no, he was nowhere to be found. The first time she was ever out of her country and that was her experience. I guess she got the taste of America.
- (Still shocked to my core) Poor girl! She must have been really scared!
- Yeah! I mean, who wouldn't! But my roommate said that it could have been worse, he could drive her to Mexico to sell her or rape her, or drop her off in the middle of nowhere, still takes her money and she wouldn't even know that's not Irvine.
- I believe that too but that was just too harsh.
- I know! I was so furious. But I think she's gonna learn a lot from that. She is so so so innocent and kind of lost.
- What do you mean?
- When it was her first class, the night before she asked me how to get to her class. You know, you should be able to do that yourself right? But I guess she was new to the city so I walked her to her class in the morning and walked her back in the evening. At every turn, we stopped for a bit and I asked her "Where do we go next?" she shook her head "I don't know!". Every turn. I mean I believe that a girl her age should be able to google her way to a destination. It's common sense.
- I think she doesn't know how to because Google is banned in China.
- Is that so? Now I figure why she seems so clueless. Well thanks for telling me that I'm gonna keep an eye on her. I hope she learns a lot studying here and hopefully become wiser.

- I'm cold! Can't believe winter is coming!
- Why are your hands so cold. Here let me warm them!
- No! You don't have to, my hands and my feet are usually very cold. I don't know why maybe I'm cold-blooded (giggle)
- Let me warm them! Quick!
- Aren't you annoyed touching them? They are cold and I know not everyone likes touching cold hands. I'm very insecure about them and I can warm them myself.
- Just give them! I don't want you to be cold!
